TKAM Project
Here is my final TKAM Project:
Coffee & TV
Blur
This song reminds me of the town of Maycomb; nothing good is happening, but when something does everybody is all-over it and gossip to keep themselves from dyeing of boredom, but the town is filled with hate and detest, like the Ewells between the Finches and Tom Robinson. Coffee and TV represent two things that many people indulge in which has very little actual value, and can act as a crutch. Coffee has very little nutritional value and TV does not inspire independent thought. ‘Sociability is hard enough for me...' so the character here needs to make an effort, to all these people who don't really care and give nothing back. All the lyrics are saying "I don’t want a special, active life; I just want to have an easy, dull-yet-safe life. This song could stand for almost everybody in Maycomb.
New Slang
The Shins
This song is about the old town of Maycomb but most importantly Boo. This is what it feels like to be stuck forever in a small, dull town, bored to tears, and you find out at the best entertainment that you can; which would be the kids of the book: Scout, Jem, and Dill. "A curse for this town" and the bitterness and anger is somehow toned down to a jaded apathy because what use is it to be angry? You curse everyone and everything you see "all the bakers at dawn, may they all cut their thumbs and bleed into their buns till' they melt away" and the days pass and you don't even seem to notice, and you think your life could have been so much more if that one person had just stayed "If you'd a took to me like a gull takes to the wind" And your self-esteem is gone entirely "king of the eyesores," "too dumb to refine" and you reach your breaking point and you tell this person...five seconds later you realize you shouldn't have. "Never should have called, but my head's to the wall and I'm lonely." Talking to the person now; which would be Scout at the end of the book, you realize they're happy, they're doing well.
Going Through Changes
Army of Me
I think this song is about Scout and Jem them both growing. ”It’s hard to have strength when there’s nothing to eat, and it’s hard to eat when you don’t have the teeth”, it saying it’s had to have something when you don’t have the other. The line “It’s hard to accept what you don’t understand”, it makes it more child like that they can’t fully understand things, example; the Tom Robinson case, they didn’t fully understand it.
There’s No Other Way
Blur
This song can stand for Boo and Scout, but mostly Boo. Actually the first part of the song is about Boo, and the last part is about Scout, but the chorus goes for both of them. Because His family (Brother) is keeping him locked up so “There’s No Other Way”. He has nothing to do; the jaded is eating him alive, so all he can do “Is watch them play”. In Scouts case: she don’t fully understand what is happening in life and why. “You're taking the fun out of everything, you're making it clear, when I don't want to think” That basically expresses Scout.
Sneaking Up On Boo Radley
Bruce Hornsby
The title speaks for its self. But the song is about the times that Scout, Jem and Dill played out side every summer. He was always watching them because he had nothing else to do better. But the title of the song came from the scene where they tried to sneak up on him. And the tree filled with random artifacts. The song was about the good times that they had.
